The project comprises development of 100MW battery energy storage system (BESS) plants on each of two separate 4 acre sites capable of providing system support services to the national electricity grid.  The BESS plants are designed to facilitate and support the electricity grid providing a continuous flow of electricity, matching demand with supply and increasing the stability and reliability of the power system.

Halston was responsible for project management of the project from concept to post planning.  Halston led coordinated the planning and development team which included site environmental due diligence, preparation of various specialist environmental reports and preparation of the planning applications.

The project involved developing and establishing the first grid connected Hybrid Powered Flywheel plant in Ireland. The plant comprised grid connected hybrid powered flywheels and battery technology. The fast responding plant was designed to allow energy to be transferred from the electricity grid system during period of low demand. During a power disturbance, the hybrid plant releases the stored energy via electrical cables to the electricity network providing instant recycled power. Using a combination of flywheel and battery technology provides a synergy in terms of power and capacity; increased performance, flexibility and capability of the plant. Other benefits of using Hybrid Powered Flywheel technology in grid-scale applications include; instantaneous response, reduced electricity wastage, high round trip efficiency, reduced carbon dioxide emissions and reduced dependency on fossil fuels.

Halston was responsible for project management of the project from concept to post planning. Halston led coordinated the planning and development team which included site environmental due diligence, preparation of various specialist environmental reports and preparation of the planning applications. A test facility constructed in 2015 which subsequently underwent successful grid performance trials in associated with Eirgrid.
